Term newborns who are at risk for sepsis: are lumbar punctures necessary?
OBJECTIVES To determine: (1) whether a lumbar puncture (LP) is indicated in asymptomatic full-term newborns delivered by mothers at risk of intrapartum sepsis; and (2) whether gentamicin improves bacterial coverage for such newborns when used with ampicillin. DESIGN A retrospective chart review from 1987 through 1993 of all newborns with positive blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid cultures in t...
متن کاملIntraventricular fibrinolysis and lumbar drainage for ventricular hemorrhage.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Both intraventricular fibrinolysis (IVF) and lumbar drainage (LD) may reduce the need for exchange of external ventricular drainage (EVD) and shunt surgery in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage and severe intraventricular hemorrhage. We investigated the feasibility and safety of IVF followed by early LD for the treatment of posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus. METHODS Thi...

We moved her near the oxygen, a sure sign of impending death at our small hospital in Uganda. She was so still, a photograph. A soft fuzz of hair had escaped her red-streaked braids. It formed a halo around the top of her head, as if she had moved while the camera shutter clicked and was forever cursed with a touch of blur. متن کاملPhenobarbitone prophylaxis of intraventricular haemorrhage.
Thirty preterm infants (birthweight under 1500 g) were treated with phenobarbitone to examine its effectiveness in reducing the incidence of intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH), the control group comprising 28 infants. The treated group had 57% incidence of IVH and mortality of 13% compared with 68% and 14%, respectively, in controls.
متن کاملIntraventricular haemorrhage and haemostasis defects.
Twenty five of 106 preterm infants of 34 weeks' gestation or less developed intraventricular haemorrhage within the first 48 hours of life. A comparison of infants with and without intraventricular haemorrhage showed no significant differences in their haemostatic parameters at birth. At age 48 hours the group with intraventricular haemorrhage showed a prolonged activated partial thromboplastin...
